At Benchmark’s annual gala held virtually on May 28, 2020, James A. Woods, founder and Chair of the firm, was inducted into Benchmark Litigation’s Hall of Fame. According to Benchmark, the Hall of Fame award is “only given to select lawyer(s) with a long, illustrious career with considerable achievements. They are individuals who have earned unanimous market recognition and praise since Benchmark’s inception”.
Asked to provide a few remarks for the gala, Mtre. Woods stated as follows:
“Thank you Benchmark for honouring me with membership in the Hall of Fame. How did I arrive at this point in my career? First, a question of pure luck: to be born into a family with parents who put the accent on scholarship, reading and sports. Next, the chance to study law at McGill University and to teach trial advocacy at McGill for over 30 years. The good fortune to have as a mentor the late John Sopinka. The hard work and brilliance of the members of my Woods team, our firm currently celebrating its 25th year. Finally, my family’s support, my daughter and partner Sarah, my two sons, Jamie and Alexandre and their mother, Solange--merci pour votre patience sur le chemin menant à cette distinction.”
This award highlights over 40 exceptional years of practice in the fields of litigation and arbitration for Mtre. Woods, who has pleaded before all instances of federal and Quebec and Ontario courts, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. During his career, he also acted as arbitrator in a large number of commercial and international files, both under ad hoc rules and under those of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Considered one of the best lawyers in Quebec and Canada, he is ranked, year after year, as a leading lawyer by Lexpert, Chambers Canada, Chambers, Global, Benchmark Canada, Best Lawyers in Canada and Who’s Who Legal. He is a fellow of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers, of the Litigation Counsel of America, and of the Federation of Defence and Corporate Counsel.
