Woods congratulates The Honourable Joseph R. Nuss, C.M., Q.C., Ad. E., who becomes a Member of the Order of Canada. Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, noted “his lifelong commitment to justice and his support to the Montréal's Jewish community”.
“This award recognizes Mr. Nuss' major contribution to the justice system and, more broadly, to society in general. His unwavering civil commitment to the pursuit of justice is an inspiring example to all members of the firm”, says Caroline Biron, Managing Partner of Woods.
Mr. Nuss is a former Justice of the Quebec Court of Appeal. As a judge, he also acted as mediator within the framework of the system of mediation established in the Quebec Court of Appeal. In his private legal practice, he devoted himself to litigation, and appeared as counsel, in various areas of the law, before the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court, all the Courts of Quebec as well as before administrative tribunals. He was counsel before a number of Federal Commissions of Inquiry. Today, at Woods, Mr. Nuss focuses his practice on domestic and international arbitration as well as mediation.
He was named Queen's Counsel in 1976, inducted Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1986 and was awarded the distinction Ufficiale dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana (Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic) in 2002.
The insignia of Member of the Order of Canada will be bestowed at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
