Mtre. Alex Dobrota is a barrister and solicitor practicing at Woods LLP in Montreal, Canada. His practice focuses on international commercial arbitration, cross-border commercial litigation and international insolvency cases. He has pleaded before all levels of the civil courts in Quebec and has represented local and international corporate clients in the context of traditional and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, including mediation and arbitration.
Mtre. Dobrota graduated from McGill University in 2010 with bachelors in civil law and common law. Prior to studying and practicing law, he wrote for a national newspaper as a parliamentary correspondent and foreign correspondent. He traveled worldwide through his assignments and reporting, in particular to Afghanistan, where, in 2007, he covered the Canadian military mission in Kandahar Province.
Successfully represented international pop artist Justin Bieber before the Superior Court of Québec, in the context of an international arbitration-related dispute with an event promoter in the matter 9302-7654 Québec inc. (Team Productions) v. Bieber, 2017 QCCS 1100 (CanLII);
Assistant to the Tribunal in the matter InfraRed Environmental Infrastructure GP Ltd. et al. v. Kingdom of Spain, ICSID Case No. ARB 14/12;
Assistant to the Tribunal in a multi-million dollar arbitration dispute proceeding under the aegis of ICDR and related to the oil and gas industry;
Acts for Rothmans, Benson & Hedges Inc. in defense of a $60 billion claim by the Government of Quebec against various tobacco manufacturers under the Tobacco-related Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act;
Acts for an international mining corporation in the context of an international arbitration with a cross-border dispute with its provider of IT services;
Represents an international mining company in a cross-border dispute with one of its equipment suppliers before the Quebec Superior Court;
Successfully defended a professional liability suit against Lippman Leebosh April LLP and obtained the dismissal of the claim brought against the auditors in the context of a corporate take-over transaction in the matter Tandalla inc. v. Lippman Leebosh April, 2015 QCCA 210 (CanLII);
Acted for the court-appointed monitor in the context of the cross-border insolvency restructuring proceedings relative to Montreal Main & Atlantic Railway.
